New cities have been added to the world tour of the INDEX: Award 2011 Exhibition. Big opening in Risør in June!

Since the beginning of the INDEX: Award Ceremony, the finalist designs have gone on a world tour to display the designs and to promote sustainability and Design to Improve Life. This year is no exception.

After opening in Copenhagen in November 2011, the exhibition is set to go to Singapore, in February to kick off the international tour. The exhibition will stay for two weeks before being shipped off to Luxembourg in April. The following confirmed stops will be in Helsinki, the current World Design Capital, Risør in Norway and at the University of Huddersfield in England. INDEX: are also in talks with both Hong Kong and Guangzhou in China to bring the exhibition there later on in 2012.

At INDEX: we are extremely proud to be able to visit these great places with our exhibition, and are very much looking forward to sharing the Design to Improve Life philosophy with the world.

Free eyeglasses for hundreds of thousands of school children
See Better to Learn Better (VerBien) is a free eyeglasses program for Mexican children designed by former INDEX: Award winner Yves Behar (One Laptop per Child, 2007). It is a collection of customizable and corrective eyewear that is specifically designed for children and young people ages 6-18 years.
ELEMENTAL MONTERREY

INDEX: Award Winner 2011, HOME Category

Social housing in a groundbreaking new way
ELEMENTAL Monterrey consists of a three story building, with a nine-meter wide house on the ground floor and a duplex apartment on top of it. Both units have a framed void that can be filled by the owners according to their own specific needs, capabilities and preferences. The project provides 70 basic houses with bathrooms, kitchens and staircases – leaving voids that allow residents to adapt and expand each property themselves when it is convenient and when they can afford it until a middle income standard is achieved.
DESIGN FOR CHANGE

INDEX: Award Winner 2011, WORK Category

Design for Change is the largest global movement designed to give children an opportunity to express their own ideas for a better world and put them into action. Children and adults learn through Design for Change that “I Can” are the two most powerful words in the world. Children who have discovered this are changing their world. Design for Change asks students to do four very simple things: Feel, Imagine, Do and Share.
HÖVDING

INDEX: Award Winner 2011, PLAY Category

Hövding is a bicycle helmet unlike any other on the market. It’s ergonomic, it’s practical, it complies with all safety requirements and it’s subtle and blends in with what you are wearing. Hövding is a collar for bicyclists, worn around the neck. The collar contains a folded up airbag that inflates only if you have an accident.
DESIGN SEOUL

INDEX: Award Winner 2011, COMMUNITY Category

Design Seoul is the first ever coherent design based approach to improve life for citizens in a very large city. The plan is based on the vision to “design caringly for citizens”, and the city of Seoul has been designing people-oriented solutions, not only to solve aesthetic challenges, but also to solve social, environmental and public health issues.
EMBRACE INFANT WARMER

People’s Choice Award 2011, BODY Category

What is the problem?
Twenty million premature and underweight babies are born a year and four million of them die. Babies that survive often grow up with life-long illnesses. Babies’ lives can be saved by providing them with thermal regulation. However, traditional incubators are expensive and require electricity and are often only found in major urban hospitals. Other current solutions include wrapping hot water bottles around babies’ bodies, placing them over hot coals or placing them under light bulbs. These solutions cause many infants to die, even if they had a high chance of survival if they had been given proper medical treatment.

Sommerdesignkontoret har fått fram 6 unike produkter på skisseplan, hvor alle skal utredes for videre produksjon.

Oppgaven var å designe en stol i relasjon til Spinnaker stolen som er en av hovedsatsningene til Hødnebø AS.

Ønsket profilering og beholdning for nytt norsk drikkevann.

Embla Design
Som smykkedesignbedrift er Embla Design kontinuerlig på utkikk etter ny design bestående av sølv og emalje.

Resultat – Designerne som arbeidet med denne oppgaven gikk til dyrenes verden og tok utgangspunkt i innsekter.

Picomed AS
Picomed produserer hjelpemidler og ga sommerdesignkontoret i oppgave å utforme, forbedre en fjernkontroll for variert bruk. Studentene ved sommerdesignkontoret ga uttrykk for at denne oppgaven er den mest tradisjonelle en industridesigner kan stå ovenfor og prosessen tok dem alle stegene i en designprosess.

Resultat – en prototype på en ”ny” fjernkontroll” som blant annet lar seg tilpasse til den enkeltes brukers behov.

Hartmann & Berg AS

Produserer og selger ørepropper. Utfordringen for sommerdesignkontoret var å produsere emballasje som vil gjøre øreproppene mer synlige i utsalgshyllene.

Resultat – Delvis gjennomsiktig emballasje som ved hjelp av tegneseriespråk tydelig viser forskjellig bruk.

Vegårshei Aktivitetssenter

Skisenteret på Vegårshei har lenge ønsket å utvikle skiltingen i sine løyper og så sommerdesignkontoret som en mulighet for å komme videre med denne satsningen.

Resultat – Skilting i røft materiell for både sommer og vinter.

For andre gang på to år gikk BLEED til topps med visuell kommunikasjon for BeyondRisør. Denne gang ble de tildelt sølv i Visueltkonkurransen. Kategorien var interaktivt design, åpen klasse.
“Beyond Light var et veldig eksperimentelt prosjekt og samsvarer ikke med kategoriene i de klassiske priskategoriene. Vi er derfor enda gladere for at vi vant sølv i kategorien “interaktiv design” i Visuelt. Det er svært positivt at publikum er klare for nye idéer innenfor dette feltet.” sier ansvarlig designer Astrid Feldner i Bleed.

This is first-ever, bank concept store for BNP Paribas in Paris, created by Paris-based architect Fabrice Ausset of Zoevox.

It is located in the historical building of 2, Place de l’Opéra. The space is filled with untypical objects such as the honeycombed ceiling and soft colors and shapes that really don´t fulfill your expectations of a business bank. Still it purveys elegance and strength. A nice way to combine serious business with playful style.

Commissioned by Virgin Media, UVA created Speed of Light to celebrate 10 years of broadband Internet.

In April 2010, the installation took over all four storeys of the industrial art-space Bargehouse on the Thames riverside for a period of 10 days. Visitors were invited to immerse themselves in a massive labyrinth of laser sculptures, built on the idea of speed being light, and light
being data.

Designed by Swedish design and architecture studio TAF for Scandinavian design company Muuto. One of the most prominent hopes for this project was to project the idea of Honesty. That’s why all bolts, joints, and screws are emphasized.
So cute! Can you imagine all the lovely little things you could paint on all the sides? I wouldn’t recommend painting the insides though, as that can sometimes lead to… fumes. Although, then you might get all loopy and the lamp will look even better!
No don’t do that! Only laugh at the thought of it.
This Wood Lamp is made of pine approximately 50 cm. tall, and it comes with either a green or white cord.

All-time favourites United Visual Artists had some beautiful projects released in 2010. One of them is “Canopy”.

Inspired by the experience of walking through a forest’s dappled light, Canopy is a 90-meter long light sculpture spanning the front facade of the Maple Leaf Square building in Toronto, Canada.

This permanent architectural installation is made of thousands of identical modules, organised in a non-repeating growth pattern. Their form, abstracted from the geometry of leaves, reflect nature. A combination of daylight and artificial light sweeping through the work recalls the activity of cells within a leaf, leaves in a forest canopy, or a city seen from the air.
